For the first time in 3 years, we were able to hold the Middle School Singles Championship at Richfield Bowl on Sunday, May 20th. The tournament attracted 87 boys and 46 girls for a total of 133 bowlers. The field was cut to the top 32 boys and top 32 girls for match play to determine the tournament champion. One of the most exciting parts of the day turned out to be the tiebreaker for the 32nd and final spot for the boys as Dustin Farnham from Atherton defeated Andrew Ford from Swartz Creek in a 2 frame roll off with the entire bowling alley rooting them on.
Before match play begin awards were given out to the high qualifiers and the high games for both the boys and girls. For the boys Sam Southard from Grand Blanc was the high qualifier with a 703 total with handicap. The high boys game in qualifying was Jacob Wildey from Lapeer who had a 243 actual that turned into a 277 with handicap and was the high game of the day. The high qualifier for the girls was Brianna Patterson from Byron with a 735 series and she was also awarded the high girls game award in qualifying with a 252 game. Each bowler received a $25 scholarship for these scores. Pictured left to right are Jacob Wildey from Lapeer, Sam Southard from Grand Blanc and Brianna Patterson from Byron.
Once qualifying was complete we moved into match play with the top 32 boys and top 32 girls facing off with a one game match with the winner moving on. As the field dwindle down to the final 4 on the boys side we had Evan Livingsston (Flushing) bowling against Dominic Dilts (New Lothrop) and Joseph Bennett (Genesee Catholic) against Lincoln Godin (New Lothrop). Dominic and Lincoln won their matches to set up the all New Lothrop final and Dominic bowled his career high game in the final with a 183 actual that swelled to a 255 with handicap and it was just too much for Lincoln to overcome as he put a final score of 211. Dominic received a $50 scholarship for winning the tournament and the other 3 boys in the final 4 received $25 scholarships.
On the girls side as the field was pared down to the final 4 we had Amelia VanDenheede (Flushing) bowling against Delaney Vanier (Kearsley) and Sierra Arnold (Lakeville) bowling against Adrianna Braden (Flushing). Amelia and Adrianna moved into the finals to set up the all Flushing final and Adrianna Braden prevailed with a 249 to 223 victory in the finals. Adrianna received a $50 scholarship for winning the tournament and the other 3 girls in the final 4 received $25 scholarships.
